Design Challenge

Take a concept for a website produced in a group project and redesign it into a print magazine, using only my own words and photography.

The magazine is fully produced, and you can read it here.

A Note

The show reviews and the accompanying photos are my works. These have been previously published on Melophile Media.

The Redesign Process

From the original project, I had been the one to design the logo. This logo went through various stages as we worked on both legibility and consistency between ‘Ghost’ & ‘Note.’ For my redesign, I kept both the original logo and kept most of the branding guide. I recreated the branding guide into something more of my style, and I also changed one of the color swatches to allow better contrast when the magazine was printed which had not previously been an issue on the website design.

What’s Inside

For content for the magazine, I wanted to focus on keeping it professional, but not full-scale editorial style. The magazine was meant to represent a more common theme in the music industry: fan-run, freelance magazines. Because of this, I looked at a lot of professional magazines and their layouts but found myself more drawn to the magazines that tended to cater towards young adult/teenage audiences and the fun components of them such as quizzes and posters.

Since the slogan “by fans for fans” is a strong component of the magazine, I also wanted to be able to uphold this. I ran a survey online asking a few different questions and received 20 answers from various fans of all ages. I then used these questions to compile the “From the Fans” sections, rather than making up answers for each of them.
